OnPage Alert Deduplication Feature
Overview
Alert Deduplication helps reduce repetitive notifications caused by systems that generate the same alert multiple times within a short period.
Administrators can configure Alert Deduplication independently for each OnPage group and choose how long OnPage should look for duplicate alerts.
This is especially useful for monitoring systems, ticketing platforms, and other automated services that may generate multiple notifications for the same event.
How Alert Deduplication Works
Alert Deduplication is configured for each OnPage group using the Dedup messages in setting.
Administrators can select:
- Never
- 30 seconds
- 1 minute
- 2 minutes
- 3 minutes
- 5 minutes
- 10 minutes
- 15 minutes
- 30 minutes
When an alert is sent to a group, OnPage checks the Sender and Subject of the message.
If another alert with the same Sender and Subject is received for that group within the configured time window, OnPage identifies it as a duplicate and prevents another notification from being generated.
Once the configured time window has passed, a new alert with the same Sender and Subject can generate a new notification.
Example
A monitoring system sends the following alerts:
Sender: [email protected]
Subject: Database Server Offline
The OnPage group is configured with:
Dedup messages in: 2 minutes
If the monitoring system sends the same alert multiple times during that 2-minute window, OnPage recognizes the subsequent messages as duplicates and prevents responders from being repeatedly notified about the same event.
After the 2-minute window expires, another alert with the same Sender and Subject can generate a new notification.
Configuring Different Groups
Each group can have its own Alert Deduplication setting based on its workflow and alert volume.
For example:
|
Group |
Setting |
Use Case |
|
Infrastructure Monitoring |
5 minutes |
Reduce repetitive monitoring notifications |
|
Help Desk |
2 minutes |
Reduce duplicate ticket notifications |
|
Critical Response Team |
Never |
Deliver every alert |
|
Network Operations |
10 minutes |
Reduce repeated alerts during an outage |
Selecting Never disables Alert Deduplication for that group. Every incoming alert will generate a notification.
Benefits
Reduce alert noise
Prevent responders from receiving repeated notifications for the same event.
Group-specific control
Each team can use a deduplication window appropriate for its workflow.
Better monitoring integration experience
Reduce notification storms from monitoring, ITSM, ticketing, and automated systems.
Preserve critical notifications
Teams that need to receive every alert can simply set deduplication to Never.
